stories about helping

Today in class we watched a video about philosophy that was made by Hank Green who is  brothers with John Green, John Green is the who is a very  famous author of The Fault in Our Stars. We watched some of the video yesterday in class and then  watch the rest the video for today’s class. We talked about concepts of philosophy. Mr Schick told us about a story of him and a homeless person he met. I think the story that Mr. Schick told us was great. He  invited a homeless man to lunch because it was freezing cold outside on the streets. He sat with him and talked for a while. Mr. Schick found out things that you would never think about him like how he was injured from working in a factory, lost his job that he had a sister and family in st Louis I think.    Mr. Schick was thoughtful enough to buy the man a ticket so he could go to his sister but he wouldn't let him do that. It was because he didn’t want his sister to see him living in that state he was in.

philosophy

today in class we started a video on philosophy. philosophy is the academic study of anything and asking questions such as: why do you do what you want? why do you think what you think? why do you feel what you feel? Philosophy comes from philosophia- the love of wisdom mythos- story telling philos- science platos academy and Aristotle's lyceum were the first universities it is also a way of thinking about big questions. the big questions are about life. what is the world like? what is the nature of reality? is there something more in the world other than matter and energy? do I have a soul?

Philosophers

Today in Western Civ we finished taking notes on the power point. The notes today were about different Philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and  Aristotle. Socrates  looked to science and logic for explanations of how the world works. He started the socratic method which fostered critical thinking.  "The unexamined life into worth the living" was a famous quote of his. Socrates was charged with serious crimes, Disrespecting the Gods and corrupting the youth. He didn't deny what he had done. Instead, he asked for free meals for life instead. He was Sentenced to death by poison hemlock.  Plato wrote the apologia to Socrates' trial. He was a student and follower of socrates who wrote teachings and describes the trial in Apology. Aristotle was a s tudent of Plato. Aristotle helped foster the idea of Athens intellectual. His school was Lyceum. it was a place were all the information was.    He did not invent the internet. However  he did want a place where everyone one

notes

Today in Western Civilization a few people still had to take the test from Friday. While they were making the test up the rest of the class was assigned to take some notes from the text book. The notes I took were about the  democracy and Greece’s Golden Age. the notes I took said that  the leader Pericles ruled over Athens for about the entire Golden Age. The leader only made one mistake in his rule and that was to challenge Sparta into war. This war was very bad loss for Athens. As a result it left them devastated because Pericles was killed. I also took about Socrates. He believed that the absolute standards did exist for truth and justice. Plato, who wrote down the conversations of Socrates. And also about Aristotle, who questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge. We read about the Greeks created drama, which there is two kinds-tragedy and comedy. A tragedy is a serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal. Comedy is sce

The Persian War

Today in Western Civ we took a lot of notes off of the power point that was about the Persian war.  The Persians had a very large army with a large amount of resources. However, they were not as motivated as the Greeks. The Greeks had many different techniques for battle.  We talked about the different battle strategies like the phalanx. The phalanx was a square of soldiers that had long spears and interlocking shields. This was very helpful during battles because  it  helped lower the causalities in the battles tendentiously.   The greeks ended up being victorious in the outcome of the war. After they  won the war the Athenian came up with something called the Delian League. This was what made all of the Greek city-states come as one a build their own army and navy so that they can defend themselves against any attacks that come.

gods and goddesses

Today in class we continued more on the Ancient Greece powerpoint. The part we went over today we went over in class was about the greek gods and goddesses. Different from religions now the humans had relationships with the different gods. We learned about the main gods and a few of the other less important ones because there was so many. For example, our notes included Poseidon, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Apollo, Demeter. And of course Zeus and Athena. The different gods a patrons of certain thing such as music, love, wine, agriculture, the sea, and much more. Zeus was the ruler of heaven and earth, and god of the sky weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice. He also was the father of Athena.  She was born from Zeus' head fully formed and armored. Athena was the  Goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare (and peace), intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts. She was a special patron of heroes like Odysseus. Lastly Athens was named after her.
