today in class we finished up our projects. We decided that Lauren was going to make the stadium and shelby was going to edit our power point and ill finish the essay. and we added a video.
      • The Ancient Games started in Olympia, Greece, from 776 BC through 393 AD,  1503 years later the olympics returned.
      • A Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who presented the idea in 1894, rebirthed the idea of the olympics
      • Over 1,500 years ago the olympics started, only 50,000 came to watch
      • The ancient games were a religious festival they were set to honor their God Zeus.
      • For the opening ceremony they lit a torch.

        • The first olympics attended in the city of Athens
        • There were 240 participants
        • 13 nations
        • 43 events
        • Ever since this is when the winter and summer olympics have been separately.
        • There are theories that the olympics might have even started in the 9th or 10th century.
          • The Stadium of Ancient Olympia was a holy place for the Ancient Greeks, where all the sports activities were dedicated to the God of Zeus
          • Seat capacity of 20,000 spectators and all seats were made from mud
          • The Stadium would also host the Heraia Games which were the games for women, held in honor of the Goddess of Hera
          • Racetrack od 200 meters long and 30-34 meters wide
          • Startinging and finishing lines are indicated by 2 stone marks which are 193 meters apart

            • free citizens
            • not a criminal
            • and whose city states agreed to participate

            • Diagoras, a member of a royal family from Rhodes
            • Alexander I, son of Amyndas and King of Macedonia
            • Democritus, a philosopher
              • All athletes competed without any attire.
              • Wrestlers and pankration (a sort of mixed martial art which combined boxing and wrestling) competitors fought covered in oil
              • Corporal punishment awaited those guilty of a false start on the track
              • There were only two rules in the pankration  no biting and no gouging
              • Boxers were urged to avoid attacking the on display male genitals
              • There were no points, no time limits and no weight classifications in the boxing

                • Going to the olympics everyone is trying achieving their goal of getting a medal, their dream is to get the gold medal in their sport. Years ago they didn’t know what medals were.
                • There were no gold, silver or bronze medals. If they won, they were given a wreath of leaves. Also they let one of their hero’s come back home. Athletes competed for the glory of their city and winners were seen as being touched by the gods.
